Trip report to Bandera 100
by Joe Prusaitis
How to get into the race...
- An entry form with money attached is all that is required. You can even show up and register on race day.
Where the race is and how to arrange your stay...
- The race itself is in the Hill Country State Natural Araea. The closest town is Bandera TX. The park is 10 miles from town.
- Bandera has many motels/hotels/dude ranchs
Because of complaints, we have posted the places we suggest you avoid. Many of the Dude ranches are much closer to the park and do offer great deals if you tell them you only need the room and not the horse rides + meals
- Camping in the park. The park has only a few campsites that you can reserve if you want privacy We also offer you to camp right at the start/finish with no reservations needed. Just show up and pay us, then we pay the park.
Driving:
- Austin to Bandera is about 120 miles. From the Y on the south side of Austin, it takes me 2 hours to get to Bandera.

1410 is 10 mile slong and goes directly into the park
This road turnr to dirt just as you enter the park
Make the 1st right turn and cross the low water crossong
This road hits a Y. Take the right split past the ranger trailer.
Stay on this road until it dead ends into the lodge.
- Texas Country road driving... There are quite a few deer out on the roads after dark. Be very careful and drive slower than posted ... if possible.
Flying:
- Closest major aiport is San Antonio. The aiport is on the north side of SA.
Take 410 W to the 16 W exit to Helotes.
16 W to Helotes, Bandera. Once in Bandera, refer to notes above for specifics.
Hot to plan for bandera: (before you even begin to run)
- Get as much rock and short steep hilles ad you can manage.
- The Bandera course is a double 50km loop. Cross Roads is the key aid station that you hit twice on each loop. Main drop bags here. The Lodge and Chapas are other drop bag places. Lodge is your start and finish, but you will only be able to use this once as you finish your 1st loop. Chapas you will use twice and for many a key place for night gear and lights.
The Run:
- If it rains, it gets very muddy.
- Many times it gets very hot (even in January) during the day.
- Texas nights are killers as the temps can drop dramatically when the sun goes down. Could even be a 50 degree swing from 80 to 30.
- The course is very well marked.
