We pulled into Bastrop
With a little help from Map Quest
Checked in at the Western
May or may not be the best
Dropped our gear and went
Trying to locate the course
Wound up at the thrift store
The guy knew we were lost
Found the tables and Henry
He was full of information
He’d just finished the markings
So he gave us an education
Got our packets from the ladies
They were supportive and obliging
Back to lodging for a night’s sleep
The morning sun would soon be rising
Back to the ranch for the start
Last minute instructions from Joe
Everything was in perfect order
On your mark, get set, now go!
Even though I was briefed
It still came as a surprise
To be walking the first mile
Through Fat Chuck’s demise
I have never run this course
And I know this may sound silly
But I discovered Rocky Hill Ranch
Is both rocky and hilly.
As far as days go
This was a great one to run
Not very much wind
And not all that much sun
My first twenty-eight miles
Went according to schedule
I ran when ever I could
And walked through the rubble
I guess I was having too much fun
My sense on direction got distorted
Somewhere along the fence line
I knew my plan would be aborted
I was hopelessly off course
There is just no explanation
I had to turn around and DNF
At the Longhorn aid station
I stopped an assistance vehicle
And was about to get a ride
When to my utter astonishment
In pulled my lovely bride
So instead of driving back
The mile to the finish area
I ran ten more miles with my wife
No decision could’ve been clearer
We spent those ten miles
Alone and together
The kind of time we don’t often get
The kind of time I will remember
So when people ask me
How’d it go at the Rocky Hills race
I just smile and tell them
The course took me to a better place
