Fisrt off, I'd like to say that I prefer the word Original versus any other as related to Old Dominion. I refuse to say that OD Memorial was a bad race as it allowed me to finish my fisrt 100 a year ago. I also would rather not try to compare the two races. I think they are as different as apples and ...you know what...I think it would be great if a bunch of adults finally figured they stuff out and merged together again so that the race can not only get more participants but get more people involved on the organizers side which would in turn make things better for everyone. If they can't merge for some strange reason than the Memorial guys should think of rescheduling their race to give more time bettween the two races.
That said, I have to say I got my first DNF last weekend after 65 miles. I injured my right IT Band to the point where I could no longer move uphill or downhill or flats without excruciating pain. I recognized the difference between hurting normally at 65 vs being injured and at that point the decision to drop out came easily. I am now learning how to deal with a DNF but I'm sure I'll rebound from the emotional low in a few days. So I'm not going to dwell on this any longer.
Instead, I'd like to say, I hope Old Dominion will still be there for years to come (not only next year so I can come back for a buckle). It is a great and challenging course, it has a long history and great people organizing it. The resources available to the RD are so limited that it would be easy for anyone to say just forget it. Instead, he and others put in a tremendous effort in helping as to achieve our dreams and goals. I honesly cannot complain about support throughout the race.
I was also impressed by a small family and emotionally charged atmosphere of the awards ceremony. I had a great chemistry and felt very much at home with everyone who helped to put the race together.
Right now I need to get some rest and let the leg heal to be ready for Lake Tahoe 100 so I'm going to focus on that and if the Old Dominion is around next June I'll be there again.
I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart all volunteers and the RDs - Ray and Wynne Waldron. Also I'd like to thank my wife for understading my situation and incredible support she provided me with last night when I arrived home despite me being away running on her birthday and understanding that now I may have to run again during her next birthday.
I have the OD bug in my blood now.
