Glacial Trail Run
Kettle Moraine State Forest
Greenbush Wisconsin
9 October 2005
by Alex Armato

Did this one back in 01' and had to come back for the beautiful Fall colors & terrain. The RD limits this race to 200 total for both distances , but my guess there were around 150 or less.

The gathering that morning & race start was at the Fire Station / Community Hall w/ lots of Coffee , Bagels energy bars & lots of conversation along with the pre race briefing.

The course consists of a 3/4 mile or so of running on road through the streets of Greenbush , then heads in to the meadows of the Kettle Moraine Region for 3/4 of a mile or so then heads into the neverending rock laden ups & downs of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The course does have intervals of relief at road crossings and a few scattered meadows, which are usually where the 2 aid stations out & 2 back, only 4 aid stations for 31 miles. The weather being so cool that was no problem whatsoever.

50 mile started at 6am & the 50K at 7am, although anyone in the 50K were welcome to start early if they were going to walk or be out there a while.Flashlights needed at 6am.Weather & temps were picture postcard perfect.

This was to be a 2 day Wisconsin race tour w/ e-z running in both races & lots of photo taking & just enjoying the energy & listening to all those crazy stories these old cats have to tell.... but I'll be danged if I didnt start tightening up w/ 13.3 to go at the aid station # 3 ! All of a sudden those 45.5 zillon rocks doubled in size & I was tripping at everything in sight ! Well I just kept stumbling my way in w/o falling at all.Not a PW , but close , even though there were no big expectations in advance.

The finish line reception were a few cheering familes along w/ the time keepers & the RD there to give you your SWEET Half Zip Finishers Pullover. Age group winners received beautiful hand crafted Ceramic Mugs.

Post race gathering which I am sure lasted a long time waiting for all the finishers in the 50 Mile was excellent Sandwiches, Chili, Summer Sausage , chips, cookies , sodas & much much more, oh & I am sure Cheese.

I was in Fond du Lac the day before for the Wild Goose Trail 8 Mile which I only ran 5 e-z miles just to loosen up the day before & to check out a new Race & Trail, this is one of those Rails to trails programs , neat.

Beautiful weather & a great weekend of Running !
