Energy Expenditure
Most calorie expenditure formulas are based on someone who weighs 150 lbs. The more we weigh the more work or calories needed (work=force x distance). Calorie needs will vary based on weight, surface area (smooth or rocky) speed, and pitch (hills or flat). During ultras we mostly burn fat because we are at a low intensity, but we need glucose (sugar) to burn fat and for the brain and central nervous system function. My guess is that for normal ultra stuff we need about 200-400 calories/hour. It will vary based on intensity and even temperature (we will use more calories just to keep warm on colder days/nights). |
